Important painting by French cubist Fernand Leger, worth roughly $3 million, goes missing. Most likely chucked in a dumpster during a renovation at Wellesley College.
The funny subtext is that the painting had been loaned to, then returned by, the Oklahoma City Museum of Art. Between the lines it's clear that hoity-toity Wellesley was just itching to blame the disappearance on those dumb-ass Sooners - but the Oklahoma folks followed cataloguing procedure, so their hands are clean.

Maybe Fernand sold his soul to Vindu the Voodoo Queen for her to zombie him after his death so that he could lurk in dumpsters by day and reclaim all his own paintings by night.
First one down, how many to go?
(well there's my next novel plot waiting...)
I once worked for a library that 'accidentally' sent its brand new reference collection to the recycling plant. D'OH indeed.
There's definitely a plot in here. To me, it seems like a natural for Donald Westlake's Dortmunder ...
